Loosely based on the real story of Melbourne's Pettingill family and also the Walsh Street police shootings, Janus follows the bitterly-fought prosecutions of a notorious criminal family, the Hennesseys, by the perspectives of the family, the police and, specifically, the attorneys, prosecutors, barristers and judges involved in every details of the narrative.
Four members of the Hennessey clan are acquitted of the shooting two young policemen at a bank heist, After the series begins. The town of Melbourne is shocked as Steve and brothers Mal, along side friend Ken Hardy and brother-in-law Darren Mack, walk free.
The prosecutors, judges, magistrates and authorities --many modelled on real life legal statistics --are determined to place the Hennessey members when they could. But legal loopholes corruption, delays, and resources combine to make the search to jail the group much from straightforward.
