Set in the Ozark Mountains during the Great Depression, Billy Coleman works hard and saves his money for two years in order to fulfill his desire of purchasing two coonhound puppies. He gains a renewed faith in God as he overcomes insurmountable obstacles in adventure and sorrow while traveling the river bottoms of Cherokee land with "Old Dan" and "Little Ann."
