For priests by his platoon, Private David Manning leaves behind a mortally injured fellow soldier and hunts in WWII Western Germany , only to learn by officer Captain Pritchett which they will have all been killed in action. Manning is promoted to sergeant and assigned to lead a platoon of youthful inductees despite asking a release on the basis of mental disability.
