In 1831, Irishman Charles Adare journeys to take up a brand new life with the support of his cousin who has only been appointed governor. If he arrives he meets with ex-convict and landowner, Sam Flusky, who would like to do a small business deal. Whilst attending a dinner party Charles meets Flusky's wife Henrietta who he'd known back in Ireland. Henrietta appears to be on the point of insanity and is an alcoholic.
