Mr. Conductor's supply of magical gold dust, which allows him to travel between Shining Time and Thomas's island, has reached a critical low. Unfortunately, he lacks the ability to acquire more. Meanwhile, Thomas is defending himself from the vicious diesel engines. Obtaining further gold dust will require the assistance of Mr. C's slacker cousin, his new buddy Lily, her gloomy grandfather, and the secret engine.
