An catastrophe that takes the life of their kid leaves Gemma and Will in pieces. When Gemma begins to blame herself, she begins to suffer from panic attacks that damage her vision and the audience's. Anguished Will has the delusional notion that he can hear his son's voice pleading for him. Their loss can be soothed by staying at Paul's Lake District country retreat, which Gemma advises they do. Assisted by Paul, an ex-pharmacist, Gemma attempts to manage her panic attacks with the use of medication. Will, unable to hear his son in his bedroom at home, antagonizes Paul and abruptly returns home. Since Paul appears to be genuinely concerned about Gemma's well-being, she has become completely dependent on him. All of Gemma's emotions are on display, from love to loss to the human condition's weakness. Will and Paul are sucked into a spiral of violence that is both psychological and physical in nature.
