During the 1848 California gold rush, Amelia reluctantly follows her husband's goal of moving west. His reckless decision to lead the caravan ahead of schedule leads to his murder at the hands of Indians, but Amelia survives. She's alone in a region she'd never intended to see, and she has almost no survival skills or supplies.
