The Six Million Dollar Man is an American television series about a former astronaut with bionic implants who works for the OSI, a fictitious government agency. The series is based on the Martin Caidin novel Cyborg, which was considered for the title of the series during pre-production. Following the broadcast of three television movies in1973, The Six Million Dollar Man ran on ABC as a regular series for five seasons between 1974 and 1978. Lee Majors, who subsequently became a 1970s star of popular culture, portrayed Steve Austin in the title role. The Bionic Woman aired from 1976 to 1978 as a spin-off series. Between 1987 and1994, a number of television films involving both titular characters were made.
