Tom Thompson, a young aspiring architect, is informed by the enigmatic Ruth Abernathy that his best friend "Bill" has killed himself. Except for the fact that Tom has never met Bill and neither have his pals, who are astonished. To make a long story short, when Tom agrees to give the eulogy at Bill's funeral, he puts himself in danger of running into Ruth, Bill's overly sexualized mother, and Julie DeMarco, Tom's old high school sweetheart who he hasn't seen in years.
