Dexter, age11, who has AIDS, and his neighbor Eric, a bit older and considerably larger, become close friends. Eric also grows closer to Dexter's mother than to his own, whose inattentive and bigoted mother vehemently forbids their association upon knowing of it. Dexter and Erik set off in search of "The Cure" after reading about it in the local newspaper.
