At the start of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is given the job of escorting the HMS Compass Rose with a group of new officers and men who just finished training. The winter seas make life hard enough, but the men also have to get used to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks while rarely being able to strike back. Traumatic events at sea and on land bring the skipper and his first officer closer.
