In 1934 Diego Padilla meets Marianne Latour, with French journalist and wins the Spanish Championship of Chess, plus they fall in love. At the close of the Civil War, Marianne convinces Diego to reside in France using their union, at which shortly afterwards Diego will likely be accused of spying by the Nazis and imprisoned in a SS prison. In prison, Diego will decide to take to to survive in a hostile environment.
