Frédéric Lansac, an artist and botanist, is having an affair with party girl Moira but dumps her when he meets the gorgeous Anne. Frédéric and Anne marry, but disaster comes when Moira arrives at the wedding and causes a commotion, forcing Anne to tumble into a bonfire. Frédéric and Anne hide out in his mansion with his servants, a pair of deafening dwarves. Anne, unsurprisingly, becomes bitter and demanding. Frédéric informs everyone that Anne has died, then employs a nurse on the side to care for her.
