The film begins with the British triumph over the Chinese in the first Opium War and the conquest of Hong Kong. Although the island is largely deserted and the terrain is inhospitable, it does have a big port that the British government and many trading companies feel will be beneficial for the import of items for trading on mainland China, a highly lucrative market.
