Spooks: Code 9 is a BBC Three counter-intelligence drama series that premiered in 2008. The series was commissioned by BBC Fiction's controller Jane Tranter as a spin-off of their long-running drama Spooks, presenting a "more maverick, younger perspective" that would appeal to a 16-24-year-old audience. The series depicts a group of six new teenage MI5 recruits who "follow a distinct rule book." It was shot in and around Leeds and Bradford by the independent production firm Kudos. The first two episodes aired on BBC Three on August10,2008, and were rerun on August11, 2008. The decision to link the new production to the original Spooks was met with criticism, with actor Georgia Moffett stating that "it's rather misleading in terms of the word Spooks." and producer Chris Fry adding "This is a brand-new show. There are no crossover characters or storylines, and it is situated in a completely separate planet." Following the moderately unsuccessful first series, executive producer Karen Wilson stated that several of the existing cast members were "contracted for another year" and identified themes "we'd like to explore if we receive a second series."
