Smilla Jaspersen, half Danish, half Greenlander, attempts to understand the death of a small boy who falls from her apartment building's roof. Smilla finds a trail of signs leading towards a firm that's made several expeditions . Scenes from the film were taken at Greenland and Copenhagen. The film was entered into the Berlin International Film Festival, where director Bille August was nominated for the Golden Bear.
