Based on the historical account of the 1940 rescue of the tanker MV San Demetrio by her own crew after she had been set afire by the German heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer and abandoned. When a lifeboat drifted back to the flaming ship the next day, they decided to board and put out the fires. Eventually, they restarted the engine and decided to try to reach Britain.
