Henry and Nicky are small-town friends from blue-collar backgrounds who have only a short amount of time before they are called up to serve in World War II. Henry falls in love with Caddie Winger, a newcomer to town who he believes to be affluent. Nicky, who is mischievous and irresponsible, gets himself into problems, which forces the other two to get involved, putting their connection, as well as the camaraderie between the boys, to the test.
