Tahimik discusses the routines of daily life in the village through voiceover. He is enthralled with the Voice of America broadcasts, particularly those about the space program. He yearns to be a member of the developed world and establishes the Werner von Braun fan club. When an American arrives for an ill-fated international meeting, he seizes his opportunity. The American invites him to Paris, where he will operate a gumball machine concession on the streets. He makes acquaintances in Paris and on a trip to Germany and learns that progress in the developed world comes at the expense of fundamental principles. With images of a Paris summit meeting playing in the background, and unable to return to an idealized version of his past, he firmly refuses to submit to progress' demands, resigning as head of the Werner von Braun fan club and claiming that he will find his own way.
