David, a comedy writer from splitting up with his boyfriend, fresh off , moves from New York City to Sacramento to help his ailing mother. Coping to first time in 10 years with much-younger sisters and his father, he feels like a stranger into his youth home. As his mother's health declines, David intentionally tries to extract significance from this dreadful experience and convince everybody (including himself) that he is"doing fine."
