Monte Walsh is an aging cowboy who is witnessing the end of the Wild West era. Monte and his pals are left with less and fewer options as barbed wire and trains gradually eliminate the necessity for the cowboy. They have new job prospects, but the freedom of the broad prairie is what they crave. They must eventually bid goodbye to the lives they know and strive to start over.
