In 1841, young Ishmael joins the Pequod, a whaler sailing out of New Bedford, for service abroad. Captain Ahab, a harsh disciplinarian, is in charge of the ship and orders his crew to find Moby Dick, the giant white whale. Ahab has lost his limb to that thing and is seeking vengeance. As the crew soon discovers, he will go to any length to achieve satisfaction.
