The lowlife rodent who attempts to take advantage of postwar patriotism and sadness is named John Payne. He tricks a war widow (Joan Caulfied) into spending her savings on an empty monument. Payne feels guilty when he falls in love with the widow, but his con-artist boss (Dan Duryea) uses muscle and gunshots to win.
