Danny Fisher, a juvenile delinquent, is expelled from high school. He quits his job as a nightclub busboy and is given the opportunity to perform one night. Success is coming, and Maxie Fields, the local criminal lord, is interested in hiring him to perform at his nightclub The Blue Shade. Danny declines, but Fields will not accept no.
