María, a 17-year-old Kaqchikel Maya, lives with her parents on a coffee plantation at the foot of an energetic volcano. She is readied to be wed to the ranch's foreman. Yet María longs to discover the globe on the other side of the hill, an area she can not even visualize. Therefore she seduces a coffee-harvester that wants to escape to the U.S.A.. When this guy leaves her behind, María discovers her own globe and also culture anew.
