Murray, now in his forties, reflects on his lowly origins as a bootlegger and his ascension to fortune and prominence as a mobster. He discusses how much of his success and pleasure are a result of the support of his "friend" Joe. Unfortunately, the only person who believes Joe is anything close to a friend is Murray, because it is self-evident that Joe backstabs him at every opportunity and is having an affair with his wife.
