An impoverished writer named Pons explores the alleyways of Christiania looking for love and an opportunity to get his writings published in 1890. He only encounters defeat and sorrow, and his grasp on reality is slipping away with each passing moment. He's happy one minute, then he's berating everyone the next. He always manages to preserve the dignity and pride of the human race.
