Former prisoner of war Jack Calgrove travels through Heaven and Earth in order to reconnect with his children following the Civil War. When Jack returns home, he discovers that his wife has tragically died and that his children, presumed orphans, are being sent deep into the West on a train that crosses enemy lines in order to be placed in new homes. Calgrove and another soldier join forces with a squad of Native American sharpshooters and a freed slave in an attempt to halt the train.
