In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newt Knight Acts as a medic for the Army. Opposed to slavery, Knight would rather help the wounded than struggle the Union. Newt goes home into Jones County to safeguard his family, after his nephew dies in battle but is branded an outlaw deserter. He finds refuge. Forging an alliance with farmers and the natives, Knight directs.
