After the death of her spouse, a mother takes off her children to live at a huge, decrepit old mansion. Nevertheless, the kids are kept hidden in an area just under the attic, visited just by their mother who becomes less and less concerned with them and their failing health, and more concerned with herself and the inheritence she plans to win from her dying father.
