A British surgeon in the 1840s experiments with anesthetic gases in an attempt to eliminate pain during surgery. While he is doing so, his demonstration in front of a panel of his peers ends in a horrible accident, with his patient awakening under the knife; he is forced to resign in disgrace. To compound problems, he develops an addiction to the gases and becomes linked with a criminal group led by Black Ben and his henchman Resurrection Joe.
