Marty Mackenzie is a failed theater actor who has developed an interest in private detective work. He accepts a position as a private investigator with Jack Potter, a crusty private detective. Both accept cases in Beaver Ridge, a filthy tiny town where a wealthy gravel mine owner is the target of a murder plot. Marty discovers that private investigation is not as straightforward as it appears.
