Mitchum portrays Jim Garry, a wandering cowboy. Garry rides into an Indian reservation after getting a job offer letter from slick-talking Tate Riling (Preston) and finds himself caught up in a dispute between cattle ranchers and homesteaders. Garry doesn't understand that Riling, the boss he now reports to, is dishonest.
