Newlyweds Corie, a free spirit, and Paul Bratter, an uptight lawyer, occupy a sixth-floor apartment in Greenwich Village in this film based on a Neil Simon play. Corie seeks to find a companion for her mother, Ethel, who is now alone, soon after their marriage, and sets Ethel up with their neighbor Victor. On a double date, inappropriate behavior generates conflict, and the young couple considers divorce.
