Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful Government minister, with a wife and well-off. All this is threatened with damning evidence of a past misdeed when Mrs Cheveley looks. Sir Robert turns for help to his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer and his father's grief. Goring knows the woman of old, and, because of him, takes the whole thing pretty badly.
